About Devil After Dark Race: Over the years, one of my favorite times at our Running with the Devil extreme heat race in late June is when the sun sets, and the night air just beckons you to be outside and run! Devil After Dark brings you that magic with a late summer evening run.

Commencing just before sunset, run through Lovell Canyon while enjoying the stunning sunset as day falls into night. Sun is replaced by stars and moonlight lights the way. The omnipresence of the surrounding canyon under the moonlit starry night is magical! Pinion Juniper trees dance in the shadows and the neon lights of Las Vegas are just minutes away. Course

COURSE

Commencing at an elevation of roughly 4500 feet, runners will experience high desert vegetation to include Joshua Trees, Pinion-Juniper, Mountain Rose, Sagebrush, and a relatively lush Toiyabe National Forest not commonly associated with Las Vegas. The road twists and turns thru the canyon; a true treasure of the Spring Mountains N.R.A. enjoying temperatures ~10 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas Valley, under the late summer nighttime sky.

Still a moderate heat race (daytime), expect daytime highs ~85- 90 degrees and overnight lows ~65. On course provisions will help keep you cool!

Travel

AIRPORT

Las Vegas' McCarran Airport (LAS) services the Greater Las Vegas area. It is serviced by numerous carriers and has on site car rental companies.

The Las Vegas McCarran Airport is located within 10 minutes of 'The Strip'.

** For those traveling from out of town- there is NO bus transportation from The Strip to Lovell Canyon. Please see 'Directions'. A few taxis may take you out there, but you'll be hard pressed to get one back into town after the race. I suggest renting a car, as rates are reasonable, and you'll be able to experience Las Vegas' surrounding areas with much more leisure. Why not check out Red Rock Canyon on your way to the race!

PLEASE NOTE: There are no concessions at the race venue, and race provided food and beverages are for registered athletes only. Spectators should come prepared to be self sufficient with food, water, shade, warmth, and necessities, if desired.

Hotels

HOTELS

With many different appetites for hotels, for this race I have chosen to not have a host hotel, but rather suggest a number of hotels that are most convenient to Lovell Canyon. You can book your rooms directly with the hotels. Note: there are no hotels close to Lovell Canyon, so the hotels listed here are mostly in the Greater Las Vegas Valley.

Camping is available at the race venue. It is primitive and there are no facilities. For more information please search on the web under Spring Mountains N.R.A. and Lovell Canyon.

Camping is also available at Red Rock Canyon Campground.

HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS AND SUITES: 6220 S. Rainbow Blvd/ Las Vegas; (702) 871-4453. This is likely the closest hotel to the race start/ finish, about 18 miles away, and conveniently located just off the I-215 Freeway. It is NOT in the middle of the Strip action, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby.

HOTELS ON THE STRIP: I suggest choosing one on the south end of the strip to be closest to Lovell Canyon. A few suggestions are:

  • The Luxor: (877) 386-4658

HOTELS OFF STRIP IN THE SOUTH VALLEY:

  • The Silverton: (866) 946-4373
  • Wingate by Wyndham (Henderson location): (702) 568-0027
  • The Orleans: (800) 675-3267
  • Doubletree Club Las Vegas Airport: (702) 948-4000

OTHERS:

  • Coast Casinos (several properties throughout the valley)
  • Bonnie Springs: for a Wild West feel away from The Strip. This is actually one of the closest hotels: approx. 21 miles to Lovell Canyon
  • Stations Casinos (several properties throughout the valley. Try Red Rock Station Casino for true pampering approx. 32 miles to Lovell Canyon.)

Heat Training Racing

Training and racing in the heat involves serious risks, including death, and as a result necessary precautions must be taken to ensure your safety, relative comfort, and the achievement of your goals. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke pose a serious threat and you should learn to recognize these signs. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, stomach issues, kidney failure, and footcare problems can all quickly put an end to your event.

You are HIGHLY encouraged to read more about these topics. Numerous articles posted on the web are available.

**PLEASE join us on Facebook by 'liking' Calico Racing on Facebook.com. We will have a discussion group on there covering all topics you will need to consider for race day success.**
